I am so honored when I am invited into a clients home to photograph their newborn! Although I have a studio, there is something so special about photographing a baby and their family in their home!

The {B} Family invited me into their home, and they did a wonderful job preparing for their session! Here are a few tips that will help you prepare for your In Home Newborn Photography Shoot

  1. What should we wear?

It is super important to wear what you feel comfortable in, and style your families clothing around that. It is so important to look and feel like yourself, and my job is to help you look and feel absolutely beautiful, because you are! Be yourself, where clothing and colors that you feel comfortable in and accentuate your personality. Don’t be afraid to wear jewelry, however try staying away from pieces that might interfere with your newborn baby.

With that said, there are a few tips that make flattering images. I suggest wearing nuetral colors. Try avoiding bright colors, such as pink, reds and green, as it can cast unflattering coloring on your newborn. Pick a color, and make that your accent color. Instead of having everyone where that color, have everyone where a style of it, for example, someone could wear a plaid shirt with that color, another could wear a solid, etc. Try avoiding busy patterns or tshirts. Often times, wording does not show well in photos, so try to avoid logos or graphic tees.

2. Do we have to clean the whole house?

Absolutely not! I have have five kiddos, and I am well aware of the chaos! Focus on one main room with good natural lighting. Good spots for newborn sessions is the Nursery, master bedroom, or living room.

3. What if my baby is fussy?

There will be plenty of time during your newborn session to feed and change your baby. You are welcome to do this at any time. There is a large range for how long newborn sessions can last. I have had them last anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours.

4. What should we have ready to use?

I will bring a small basket of hand selected wraps and props to use during your session, so it is important for you to let me know if there is any specific colors or props you would like for your session. I also will bring a basket or two, and a few blankets.

5. How can we prepare our home?

Newborns tend to sleep a little better when its warmer. When I shoot at the studio I try to keep my studio around 78-80 degrees F. I often will also use a space heater (at a safe distance) to keep the area warm. With that being said, remember that a TOO hot home can also make baby uncomfortable as well.

Hopefully these are just a few tips that will help you prepare for your In Home Newborn Session!
